European Molecular Biology Organization

The European Molecular Biology Organization is a professional organization of more than 1.800 life scientists. Its goal is to promote research in life science and enable international exchange between scientists. It organizes courses, workshops and conferences, publishes five scientific journals and supports individual scientists and projects. The organization was founded in 1964 and is a founding member of the Initiative for Science in Europe. As of 2016 the Director of EMBO is Maria Leptin, a developmental biologist at the University of Cologne, Germany.

International Organization for Biological Crystallization

International organization for biological crystallization is a non-profit scientific organization for scientists who study the crystallization of biological macromolecules and to develop techniques for crystallographic study. It was founded in 2002 to create a permanent body to organize the international conference on crystallization of biological macromolecules. ICCBM conferences are held twice a year with sites that regularly change in order to preserve the international character. IOBCr the purpose is to exchange results of scientific research and encourage the practical use of biological crystallization. It organizes and supports interdisciplinary seminars. Attendance at meetings ICCBM includes bio-crystallographers, biochemists, physicists, and engineers. The last international conference on crystallization of biological macromolecules ICCBM15 was held in Hamburg, Germany.

International Organization for Biological Control

International organization for biological and integrated control, is an organization affiliated with the International Union of biological Sciences, is organized to promote and study the biological control of pests, integrated pest management and integrated production.

Organization of Biological Field Stations

Organization of biological field is a non-profit multinational organization representing field stations and research centers in Canada, USA and Central America. While it has no administrative or management control over their stations-members, it helps to increase their effectiveness in research, education and outreach activities through various initiatives. This includes encouraging the establishment of research networks, working with government agencies in order to expand sources of funding and collaboration between scientists and politicians. In OBFS is working with the National center for ecological analysis and synthesis NCEAS, University of California natural reserve system the UC NRS, and a network of long term ecological research management maintain a comprehensive registry of research datasets that can be used in future research projects. Since its creation in 1963, the organization has grown to nearly two hundred of our member stations. With success, the international organization of biological field stations IOBFS was later created to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas in a broader geographical scale.

Electric organ (biology)

In biology, the electric organ is an organ common to all electric fish used for the purposes of creating an electric field. The electric organ is derived from modified nerve or muscle tissue. The electric discharge from this organ is used for navigation, communication, mating, defense and also sometimes for the incapacitation of prey.

The Organism: A Holistic Approach to Biology Derived from Pathological Data in Man

The organism: a holistic approach to biology derived from pathological data in man is a book about psychology and neurology from Dr. Kurt Goldstein, first published under the title der Aufbau des organisms: Einfuhrung in Die Biologie unter besonderer Berucksichtigung der kranken Erfahrungen I D in 1934. A new edition of the English translation was published in 1995: the organism: a holistic approach to biology derived from pathological data in man, with a Foreword by Oliver sacks, new York, zone books. After Hitler came to power, Goldstein fled to Amsterdam, supported by the Rockefeller Foundation, where he dictated his work that would become his Magnum opus, in only six weeks. Goldstein described the work is written in a "period of forced vacation" in the Netherlands during his flight from Nazi Germany, it was published only minor changes in English translation in 1939. Goldstein helped Institute in the field of phenomenological psychiatry. In the organism, Goldstein said that human life cannot be compared with a system that simply returns to equilibrium after stimulation from outside. Goldstein, after criticism of different attempts to classify the instincts, writes that there are instinctive manifestations from "the drive to self-realization." At some point the body has a fundamental desire to realize all its possibilities, all its potential, as it is present in exactly that moment, and in such a situation, in contact with the world under the given circumstances. In fact, the term "self-actualization" was coined by Kurt Goldstein as a biological concept to describe the tendency of organisms innate motivation to implement as much as possible, which was subsequently renewed. Goldstein also referred to the same disk as "the tendency actualization" and "formative tendency". In the body of Goldstein, the main objective was to apply the figure-ground principle of Gestalt psychology of perception of the whole organism, presuming that the whole organism serves as the ground for the individual stimulus forming the figure - thus formulating an early criticism of the simple behavioral stimulus-response theory. Goldstein pointed to the experience of individuals with lesioned brains makes it obvious that our neurological and neuropsychological functioning socially intertwined with other brains. Goldstein describes the preferred behavior in contrast to non-preferred behaviour as the realization of the abbreviated subset of all the possible performances available to yourself that it is characterized by a feeling of comfort and correctness. In his work, Goldstein claimed that certain colors evoke specific emotional responses. Subsequently, the doctors argued that children use color in painting, for example, is a manifestation of their emotional state. In his Preface to the English edition, 1995, Oliver sacks writes S. 9: "But from the beginning, the doctor in him classical methods - determination of the number of isolated "deficit" - inadequate. the deficit he might, he felt, was always the General reaction or change as much or sometimes further than the deficit. Growing up on his feelings of the patient reacts as a whole, as an organism, developing altered orientations and behaviours in response to injury or disease. This feeling comes to the crisis, during the First world war, when he had to face the task of processing a large number of young soldiers with brain injuries. Very complex pictures he had seen in these patients led him to develop an increasingly complex set of theoretical concepts: abstract vs. specific behaviors, catastrophic reaction to brain injury, and so on." Sachs goes on P. 11: "The concept of order is Central to Goldsteins ideas of health and disease and rehabilitation, "OK, well then to be able to order from behavior which may prevail in spite of the impossibility of certain performances which were formerly possible. But the new condition is not the same as the old one. restore again to reach a state of ordered functioning.a new individual norm." Thus, in contradiction with the classic "splitting" neurology, Goldstein sees that the symptoms are not as isolated manifestations of local lesions in the nervous system, and as "attempted solutions" of the body came as soon as it has been changed as a result of the disease. Symptoms for Goldstein means that all levels of the organisation, adaptation to the changed internal state and the world. It is impossible, he stresses, we will consider any disease - but primarily a neurological disease - without reference to patients, and its adaptation and orientation in it. Diseases for Goldstein, involves "shrinkage" and the world, as long as the balance is a fundamentally new sort can be achieved."
