Open Tree of Life

The open Tree of Life is an online phylogenetic tree of life is a joint project funded by the National science Foundation. The first project, including 2.3 million views, was released in September of 2015. An interactive timeline allows the user to increase taxonomic classifications, phylogenetic trees, and information about the node. Clicking on a view will return to its source and a reference taxonomy.

Phylogenetic tree

A phylogenetic tree or evolutionary tree is a branching diagram or "tree" showing evolutionary relationships among various biological species or other entities - their phylogeny based on similarities and differences in their physical or genetic characteristics. All life on Earth is part of a single phylogenetic tree, pointing to a common origin. In a rooted phylogenetic tree, each node with descendants represents the output of the last common ancestor of these descendants, and the edge length of a few trees can be interpreted as time estimates. Each node is called a taxonomic unit. Internal nodes are generally called hypothetical taxonomic units, as they cannot be directly measured. Trees are useful in fields of biology such as bioinformatics, systematics and phylogenetics. Unrooted trees illustrate the only the connectivity of the vertices, and does not require root ancestors to be known or perceived.

Tree of life (biology)

The tree of life or universal tree of life is a metaphor, model and research tool used to study the evolution of life and to describe relationships between organisms, both living and extinct, as described in the famous passage in Charles Darwins on the origin of species. In the kinship of all beings of the same class sometimes seems to be a big tree. I believe that this comparison is largely telling the truth. Schema trees originated in the middle Ages represent genealogical relationships. Phylogenetic tree diagrams in evolutionary terms, at least in the early 19th century. The term phylogeny for the evolutionary relationships of species through time, was coined by E. Haeckel, who went further than Darwin, offering a phylogenetic history of life. In modern usage, the tree of life refers to the compilation of comprehensive databases, the phylogenetic roots of the last common ancestor of life on Earth. The open Tree of life, first published in September 2015, a project to compile such a database for free access.

Coral of life

Coral life is a metaphor or a mathematical model useful to illustrate the evolution of life or phylogeny at different levels of resolution, including individual organisms, populations, species and major taxonomic groups. Its use in biology solves a number of practical and conceptual difficulties associated with the tree of life.

Evolution of seed size

There were the first seeded plants in the late Devonian 370 million years ago. The selection pressures shaping the size of seeds derived from physical and biological sources, including drought, predators, seedling-seedling competition, the optimal depth of dormancy and dispersal.

Earliest known life forms

The earliest known life forms on Earth, the putative fossilized microorganisms found in hydrothermal vents precipitates. The earliest time that life forms first appeared on Earth at least 3.77 billion years ago, possibly as early as 4.28 billion years, or even 4.5 billion years, shortly after the oceans formed 4.41 billion years ago, and after the formation of the Earth 4.54 billion years ago. The earliest direct evidence of life on Earth are microorganisms permineralized in 3.465-billion-year-old Australian apex chert rocks.

Outline of life forms

Form of life – essence that lives, such as plants and animals. It is estimated that over 99% of all species that ever existed on Earth, in excess of five billion species that have become extinct.
