★ Homochirality

Homochirality is a uniform chirality, or arm. Objects are chiral when they cant be superimposed on their mirror images. For example, on the left and right human hands are approximately mirror images of each other, but not their own mirror, so they are chiral. In biology, 19 of the 20 natural amino acids homochiral, being l-chiral, while the sugar is D-chiral. Homochirality can also contact enantiomeric substances in which all the components are the same enantiomer, but some sources discourage the term.

It is unclear whether homochirality has a purpose, however, it seems that this form of information storage. One suggestion is that it reduces entropy barriers in the formation of large organized molecules. Experimentally, it was confirmed that amino acids form large aggregates in larger abundance from samples enantiomeric amino acids than racemic enantiomerically mixed.

Its not clear whether it came before or after the homochirality of life, and many of the mechanisms of its origin have been proposed. Some of these models propose three distinct steps: mirror-symmetry creates a minute enantiomeric imbalance, chiral amplification builds on this imbalance, and chiral transfer is the transfer of chirality from one molecule to another.

1. In biology. (В биологии)

Amino acids are the building blocks of peptides and enzymes, while the sugar-peptide chains are the backbone of RNA and DNA. In biological organisms, amino acids appear almost exclusively in left-handed form of L-amino acids and sugars in the form of a right R-sugars. Because enzymes catalyze reactions, they provide homochirality on a great many other chemicals, including hormones, toxins, fragrances and food flavors. Glycine is achiral, as well as some other non-proteinogenic amino acids are achiral, such as dimethylglycine or D-enantiomeric form.

Biological organisms are easy to distinguish molecules with different chiralities. This may affect physiological responses such as smell and taste. Carvone, as found terpenoids in essential oils, the smell of mint in the L-form and cumin in the R form. Citric tastes like lemons, when right-handed and oranges for left-handers.

Homochirality may also affect the response to drugs. Thalidomide, in his left hand, treats morning sickness, in its right form, it causes birth defects. Unfortunately, even if you enter the levo version, some of them may convert to right-hand drive form in the patient. Many drugs are available as a racemic mixture of equal amounts of both chiralities and enantiomera the preparation of only one chirality. Depending on the production process, shapes enantiomer can be more expensive to manufacture than a stereochemical mixture.

Chiral preferences can also be found at the macroscopic level. Shells can be right-turn or left turn of the spiral, but in one form or another is strictly preferred in this type. In the snail Helix pomatia, only one of 20.000 left-screw. Winding plants can have a preferred chirality, and even chewing motion of cows has a 10% excess in the same direction.

2.1. Origin Symmetry breaking. (Нарушение симметрии)

Known mechanisms for the production of non racemic mixtures of the racemic starting materials include: asymmetric physical laws, such as the electroweak interaction, asymmetric environments such as those caused by circularly polarized light, quartz crystals, or the earths rotation, and the statistical fluctuations in the racemic synthesis. Once established, chirality would be selected for. A small enantiomeric excess can be amplified into a Large one asymmetric autocatalysis, such as in the Soai reaction. In asymmetric autocatalysis, the catalyst is a chiral molecule, which means that a chiral molecule is to stimulate its own production. The initial enantiomeric excess, for example, can be produced by polarized light, then the more abundant enantiomer to beat others.

One assumption is that the discovery of an enantiomeric imbalance in molecules in the Murchison meteorite supports extraterrestrial origin of homochirality: there is evidence for the existence of circularly polarized light arising from the mie scattering for compliance interstellar dust particles that can cause the formation of enantiomeric excess in chiral materials in space. Interstellar and Stellar magnetic field can align particles of dust in this fashion. Another speculation on the Vester-Ulbricht hypothesis suggests that fundamental chirality of physical processes such as beta decay see the parity violation leads to slightly different half-lives of biologically relevant molecules. Homochirality may also be the result of a spontaneous absolute asymmetric synthesis.

It is also possible that homochirality is simply a result of the natural autoamplification process of life is the formation of life, preferring one chirality or the other was a chance rare event which happened, is happening with the chiralities we observe, or that all chiralities of life emerged rapidly but due to catastrophic events and strong competition, others watch the chiral preference was destroyed by the preponderance and metabolic, enantiomeric enrichment from winning the chirality selection. The emergence of chirality consensus as a natural autoamplification process was associated with the 2nd law of thermodynamics.

2.2. Origin Theory. (Теория)

In 1953, Charles Frank proposed a model to demonstrate that homochirality is the result of autocatalysis. In his model L and D enantiomers of a chiral molecule autocatalytically produced from achiral molecules in

A + L → 2 L, A + D → 2 D

the suppression of each other by a reaction, which he called a mutual antagonism

L + D → ∅.

In this model, the racemic state is unstable in the sense that the slightest enantiomeric excess is amplified to a homochiral state. This can be shown by calculating the rates of the reactions from the law of mass action:

d }}\right)\Phi. }

The linear stability analysis of this equation shows that racemic state Φ = 0 {\the style property display set to \PI =0} is unstable. From almost everywhere in the concentration space, the system evolyutsioniruet to a homochiral state.

In General, it is clear that autocatalysis alone is not inferior to homochirality, and the presence of mutually antagonistic relations between the two enantiomers is necessary for instability in the form of racemic mixtures. However, recent studies have shown that homochirality can be achieved by autocatalysis in the absence of a mutually antagonistic relationship, but the underlying mechanism for symmetry different.

2.3. Origin Experiments. (Эксперименты)

There are several laboratory experiments that demonstrate how a small amount of one enantiomer in the beginning of reaction can lead to a large excess of one enantiomer as a product. For example, the reaction is autocatalytic Soai. If the reaction starts with any one of the product enantiomers are present, the product acts as enantioselective catalysts for the production of the same enantiomer. The initial presence of just 0.2 equivalent of one of the enantiomers may result in up to 93% enantiomeric excess of the product.

Another study concerns the Proline catalyzed aminoxylation of much of nitrosobenzene. In this system, a small enantiomeric excess of the catalyst leads to a large enantiomeric excess of the product.

Serine octamer clusters are also contenders. These clusters of 8 Serine molecules appear in mass spectroscopy with an unusual homochiral preference, however there is no evidence that such clusters exist under non-ionizing conditions and amino acid phase behavior is far more prebiotically relevant. The recent observation that partial sublimation of a 10% enantioenriched sample of leucine results in up to 82% enrichment in the sublimate shows that the enantioenrichment of amino acids could occur in space. Partial sublimation processes can take place on the surface of meteors where there are large temperature swings. This discovery may have implications for the development of the organic detector Mars, scheduled to launch in 2013, which is aimed at the recovery of trace quantities of amino acids from Mars, like the surface by sublimation.

A high asymmetric amplification of the enantiomeric excess of sugars are also present In the amino acid catalyzed asymmetric formation of carbohydrates

One classic study involves an experiment that is carried out in the laboratory. When sodium chlorate is allowed to crystallize from water and the collected crystals examined in a polarimeter, each crystal turns out to be chiral and either the L or D form. In an ordinary experiment the amount of L crystals collected equals the amount of D crystals corrected for statistical effects. However, when the solution of chlorate of sodium is stirred during the crystallization process the crystals are either exclusively L or exclusively D. In 32 consecutive crystallization experiments 14 experiments deliver D-crystals and 18 others l -crystals. The explanation of this symmetry is unclear, but is related to autocatalysis occurs during nucleation.

In the experiment, a Crystal suspension of a racemic amino acid derivatives continuously stirred, results in 100% crystal phase of one of the enantiomers in the enantiomeric pairs, because in equilibrium in the solution compare with dynamic kinetic resolution.

2.4. Origin Transfer. (Перевод)

Many of the strategies in asymmetric synthesis are based on chiral transmission. Particularly important is the so-called organic catalysis of organic reactions by Proline for example in the reaction manniche.

3. Optical resolution in racemic amino acids. (Оптическое разрешение в рацемической аминокислоты)

There is no theory elucidating correlations among L-amino acids. If you take, for example, alanine, which has a small methyl group, and phenylalanine, which has a larger benzyl group, a simple question-in what aspect, L-alanine resembles L-phenylalanine more than D -phenylalanine, and what kind of mechanism causes the selection of All L-amino acids. Because it may be possible that I of alanine and phenylalanine were D.

It was reported in 2004 that excess racemic g, L-asparagine ASN, which spontaneously forms crystals of one isomer during recrystallization, induces asymmetric solutions co-existing racemic amino acid such as arginine ASP aspartic acid, glutamine, eng, his histidine, leucine LEU and methionine Met phenylalanine PHE, serine Ser, Val valine, TYR tyrosine, and tryptophan TRP. Enantiomer excess EE = 100 ×L - D / L D these amino acids varies almost linearly with the inducer, i.e., ASN. When recrystallizations from a mixture of 12 g of L-amino acids and excess D, L -ASN were made, all amino acids with the same configuration with ASN mainly co-kristallizuetsya. It was incidental whether the enrichment took place in L - or D -ASN, however, once the choice was made, coexisting amino acids with the same configuration at the α-carbon is preferable because of thermodynamic stability in the crystal formation. The maximum EE is reported to be 100%. Based on these results it is assumed that a mixture of racemic amino acids causes strong and effective optical resolution, even if asymmetric synthesis of a single amino acid does not occur without the aid of optically active molecules.

This is the first study, explaining reasonably the formation of chirality from racemic amino acids with experimental evidences.

4. History of the term. (История термина)

This term was introduced by Kelvin in 1904, he published his Baltimore lecture of 1884. Calvin used the term homochirality as the relationship between two molecules, i.e. two molecules of homochiral if they have the same chirality. Recently, however, homochiral has been used in the same sense as enantiomerically pure. This is permitted in some journals, but not recommended, its meaning changing into the preference of a process or system for one optical isomer in a pair of isomers in these journals.
